Plymouth came in to this match on a flying run whereas Barnsley were looking to prevent defeat. It was Barnsley that took the early lead to everyone’s surprise as Antony Kay score to make it 1-0. Sylvan Ebanks Blake equalized for Plymouth and Hayles put Argyle in front after 34 minutes with a cracking goal. After end to end action, Richards equalized for Barnsley on the 50th minute to share the points between the two clubs.

Plymouth more or less ensured survival in the championship with several weeks to spare as they enjoyed their most convincing away win of the campaign. The Pilgrims took the lead after only three minutes as Dexter Blackstock gave them the lead. Steve Norris put Plymouth two ahead mid way through the first half and they could have scored more. The second half saw the Pilgrims dominate most of it and Dexter Blackstock scored his second and Plymouth’s third goal to seal the victory.

Johnny Hore managed the club during the 1983 – 1984 campaign and despite watching his Plymouth side underachieve in the league, the Pilgrims enjoyed their finest ever run in the FA Cup as everybody in the country took note of the club. Plymouth was in emphatic form in the tournament and reached the semi finals of the competition, only suffering a slender 1-0 defeat against Watford. The semi final was played at Villa park as Plymouth came through from the first round in to the semi’s, including victories over Derby County and West Brom en route to the last four.
